How AMETEK Spectro Scientific built a global customer-education academy on Thinkific

Learn how AMETEK Spectro Scientific scaled customer training worldwide on Thinkific, growing from 5 to 25 courses and roughly doubling enrollments in 18 months.

AMETEK Spectro Scientific is a global provider of oil analysis instrumentation and software that helps organizations monitor the health of lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and machinery to support condition-based maintenance and reliability programs across industries such as industrial manufacturing, power generation, transportation, marine, defense, and mining.

The company develops and manufactures laboratory and field-deployable technologies for fluid analysis, including spectroscopy, viscometry, particle counting, infrared analysis, and AI-driven analytics through the TruVu 360 platform, enabling customers to detect equipment issues early, optimize maintenance decisions, and reduce unplanned downtime.

“We develop oil analysis instrumentation and fluid intelligence software that help maintenance and reliability teams monitor lubricant condition, assess equipment health, and make better maintenance decisions.”

— Lisa Williams, Digital Product Manager, AMETEK Spectro Scientific

Deploying lab-grade oil analysis instrumentation worldwide creates a need for scalable training and education, ensuring users can confidently apply the data to their reliability programs. The instrumentation ultimately delivers its full value when customers’ teams know how to operate it; however, the field service engineers who installed the equipment were typically on site for only a week, leaving limited time to transfer their expertise. The operational knowledge wasn’t reaching beyond the accounts the company could directly serve.

The challenge: expertise that couldn’t scale

Spectro Scientific needed to turn deep, hands-on expertise into a program it could deliver to any customer, anywhere, capturing what its engineers and specialists knew and making it available on-demand, in multiple languages, without adding headcount for every new account. The goal was to give every customer the same depth of guidance the company could previously offer only in person, and to do it on a global scale.

Why Thinkific

Evaluating platforms, Williams set clear requirements: it had to operate globally and handle a large, growing base of learners; it had to support multiple languages; and it had to be simple enough that a small team could build professional, certificate-bearing courses quickly. Thinkific met every one.

What I found most useful about Thinkific is the easy infrastructure on the back end — being able to figure it out quickly and not having to contact support every time. If you have good content, Thinkific takes care of the rest. It makes your content look good.”

The academy today: from five courses to complete coverage

What began with five courses is now the Fluid Management Academy: 25 customer-facing courses and roughly 60 in total, covering every product the company sells. Beyond customer education, Spectro Scientific uses the platform to onboard employees, enable a global network of about 150 sales representatives, and publish product updates once for reuse everywhere. This past year the team reached full course coverage across its portfolio, a milestone Williams had worked toward for years.

Training has become an increasingly important part of customer success, helping users build the knowledge and confidence needed to get the most value from their investment.

“We incorporate training discussions from the start because collecting data from our instruments is only part of the equation. By helping users properly operate and maintain the instrumentation and follow best practices, we enable them to trust the data and make more informed decisions about the equipment they manage.”

The results: adoption and self-sufficiency

As training became standard in how Spectro Scientific sells and supports its products, enrollments roughly doubled in about 18 months and currently reach some 300 people across its sales-representative network, with another 150 on the customer side. But the outcome Williams values most is customer self-sufficiency. When customers are equipped with the right knowledge, they can use the instrumentation more effectively, troubleshoot routine issues on their own, and realize value more quickly.

The academy provides customers with a foundation of knowledge that addresses common questions and best practices, allowing the support team to focus on more complex customer needs. Since the academy launched in 2021, more customers have incorporated on-demand training into their learning journey, using the courses as a flexible way to build knowledge and skills at their own pace.

Program interest now extends across AMETEK: colleagues regularly seek Williams out to learn how she built it, turning the academy she created into a blueprint others want to follow.

Next, Williams is exploring a badging and certification program that would recognize customer proficiency and encourage continued learning. The initiative would provide a structured pathway for customers to validate their skills and stay current as products, features, and best practices evolve.
