Feeling “aligned” with your online course idea is incredibly important.

The more progress I make in my business, and the more students I teach online, the more I have come to believe that when someone is not aligned with their idea… it’s unlikely to work. Even if it’s an epic idea of Richard Branson proportions!

What is alignment?

Spiritual gurus far smarter than I could give you a far superior explanation. But the way I always like to think of alignment is this:

Alignment is when your insides match your outsides.

It’s when your inner beliefs, desires, and values are matched by your external actions and behaviors.

When your insides and your outsides match, you can achieve an incredible amount in a small period of time.

Consider, as an example, the parent who has a health scare – say, they’re diagnosed as pre-diabetic. All of a sudden, with all their heart, ALL they want to do is get fit and healthy for their kids and their future. They dive into a new diet and fitness regime with gusto and make immense, swift progress. And even though it gets hard sometimes – and sometimes they falter – their actual commitment never wavers.

But when your insides and your outsides DON’T match, no matter how hard you push, you’ll find yourself butting up against impossibly large brick walls – sometimes internal, sometimes external, and often making no sense at all.

As a comparison, consider the person who “decides” they want to get healthy and lose weight, and yet they can’t seem to find the motivation to get off the couch or cook healthy meals. Their progress is stilted – if it happens at all. And though it might seem like not much is happening on the outside in terms of progress, on the inside, they’re engaged in a constant battle with themselves, trying to get both their inner self and their outer self on the same page.

How to be Aligned With Your Online Course Idea | Kathryn Hocking

How does this all apply to your online course idea?

If you choose an idea that doesn’t sit right with you – even if it’s just a tiny part of you – you’ll struggle to find the energy and motivation to see your idea through to completion.

BUT, the confusing thing for us ‘mere mortals’ is that it’s not always easy to identify when this particular kind of dis-ease is present. Why? Because in any big project or creative work, there’s ALSO a whole array of fears present that are actually completely normal.

…Which is where we can get confused!

Basically, there are some fears that are a big red flag that you’re not aligned with your idea.

Then there are some fears that are a sign that you’re stretching yourself in a healthy, wonderful, progress – making way and are completely on the right track.

Your job is to figure out which type you’re feeling…

To help you tell the difference, I’ve created a chart (see below). In the left-hand column are the HEALTHY fears – the kind that it’s totally okay to have as you pursue your online course idea. (In fact, if you don’t have at least one of them, I’d be slightly worried that you weren’t pushing yourself far enough!)

In the right column, on the other hand, are the fears that may indicate that your current online course idea is out of alignment with your beliefs and values for some reason. If you identify with more than one or two in this column, it’s a sign that you might need to choose another idea.

The Alignment Matrix

Are you aligned with your online course idea, inside and out?

Think about the idea that you’ve selected. Imagine following through on it – getting a logo made, writing content for it, creating a sales page, announcing it to your tribe, delivering it to your students…

Notice any unpleasant thoughts or sensations that may arise as you think these things over. Drill down into those thoughts and sensations.

Now tell me: What’s causing your fear and worry? Where is it coming from? How would you describe it?

Tally up how many of the following apply for you from each column.

Filled with healthy fears? Don’t be afraid – they’re perfectly normal. Here are some of my go-to resources to overcome them:

Also try:

  • Journaling
  • Exercise (particularly long walks outside in nature)
  • Meditation
  • Kinesiology
  • Massage
  • Flipping oracle cards
  • Practicing massive compassion for yourself

Concerned that you might be out of alignment?

If you identified with some of the statements in the right-hand column, it could be a sign that you’re not completely in alignment with your online course idea.

There are a number of things you can do from here:

1. Go back to the beginning

Go back to the beginning of the idea process, identify at what point you start to notice those internal resistance-feelings crop up. Where are you getting off track? Where are they stemming from?

2. Start over with a different approach

Go through the entire process again but with a completely different approach, perhaps considering a different segment of customers or a different topic area. Let yourself get playful and experimental. Make different choices, go deeper, and see what you come up with.

3. Get some help

Seek some professional help to help you discover the source of your alignment issues – whether that’s a kinesiologist, an EXPERIENCED business coach (whom you feel aligned with), or an intuitive counselor etc. (Always follow your own gut, though.)

4. Take a break

Take some time away from the process to clear your head. Do lots of activities that ground you and connect you with your body – like yoga, walking, dance etc. Give yourself as much time and space as you need to identify the source of your alignment issues and start to work through them.

Also try:

  • Journaling
  • Exercise (particularly long walks outside in nature)
  • Meditation
  • Kinesiology
  • Massage
  • Flipping oracle cards
  • Practicing massive compassion for yourself

(Yes, these are the same suggestions as for the healthy fears – these techniques are that powerful!)
